New Orleans Lakefront Airport

About the Project
Lakefront Airport, located in New Orleans East adjacent to the Industrial Canal, was slated for major site and drainage improvements by the Non-Flood Protection Asset Management Authority (NFPAMA). The upgrades included milling the existing runway surface, removing the existing marks from the intersecting taxiways, replacing the surface with hot mix asphalt, and installing new airfield markings. Additional drainage improvements included the removal and installation of two cross drains, installation of a coffer dam system, and improvements to side drainage. An additional inch of asphalt brought the total overlay thickness to five inches.

When it originally opened in 1934, the historic airport was the largest airport in the U.S. and the first combined land and seaplane air terminal in the world.
